One of the more well-known morons in Skypeland asked me a question. He was drunk (as usual; I have never heard him sober actually) and slurring his words so badly that I asked him if he could enunciate a bit more clearly. He immediately ripped into me that I did not know English. He was sure I meant "annunciate" or "pronunciate". I said that the word was enunciate. The drunk disagreed, and he was backed up by another lout. I offered to read the definition from the dictionary and I did, from the American Heritage Dictionary:
e·nun·ci·ate (ĭ-nŭn'sē-āt') v., -at·ed, -at·ing, -ates. (v.tr.)
1. To pronounce; articulate.
2. To state or set forth precisely or systematically: enunciate a doctrine.
3. To announce; proclaim.
Of course, they were shouting over me and attacking me and telling me how awful I am while I tried to read this definition. Then I decided I did not need to hear much more of this abuse. So I removed myself from the talking area.
Then, this paragon of wisdom and learning announced in a drunken slur to all in the room, "About Bob I have something to say. He is intellectually unsound...About his blog, his literature is not quite correct and he does not know how to spell..." This was compounded by the presence of a couple of others who also were dishing out abuse. I realized that no corrective action was going to be taken. Also, I realized that this character, who dishes out anti-semitic and anti-American and anti-English rhetoric and who claims to be superior to everyone in all ways, was free to answer his own questions from his own vast storehouse of boozy knowledge. And I left.
So how many hours of this from a drunken fool does someone need? I decided, I did not need much more. After all, I had already put up with a good 10 or 15 hours worth, spread over a number of casts over a number of days...
Without a room host willing to manage the room, it will quickly descend into this kind of turmoil. And it takes only one or two people talking nonsense in a room to destroy it.
