A religion of peace...except

I often hear from Muslims in Skypeland and elsewhere, that Islam is a religion of peace and a given type of bad behavior is strictly forbidden by the Koran. However, they always add an "except" to this, which justifies any killing and violence and brutality whatsoever. Ah, that "except" makes all the difference, doesnt it?
