A young man who claimed to be Iraqi came into our room in Skypeland. He had nothing but negative things to say about the American efforts in Iraq. He said that Iraq was still under sanctions and had been under sanctions since 1998. He said these sanctions were imposed by the US. (Actually the Iraq sanctions were UN sanctions, and they lasted from 1990 when Sadam invaded Kuwait until the US and its coalition partners attacked in March of 2003: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_sanctions . Something so basic and easy to check; how could he get it so screwed up? And of course the US encouraged the UN sanctions, but the sanctions were joined by a large number of other countries around the world. This was not some unilateral action on the part of the US.).
We asked him if he was Shia, Sunni or Kurdish. Some in the room said it was racist to ask him this, and he took offense at being asked. He then said he was a Kurd. We explained that the reason for this was to find out where he was coming from so we could interpret his answers better and give him the correct information.
However, I noticed his profile said he from Germany. At that point, we realized that he might not be Kurdish at all, or might have very out-of-date information. When I challenged him on it, he did not deny it. And he had his microphone shut off. Oh well...
