You ever go to a titty bar?

One young lady in Skypeland just butted into a political conversation with a sort of dumb comment, "You ever go to a titty bar?" It pretty much wrecked the serious conversation for a few minutes.

Finally we got back on track since she was an environmental activist, studying political science and psychology at university. She claimed that we were all bad for not recycling plastics, since the largest consumer of petroleum was the plastics industry. This was a waste to her, since we could easily recycle instead. Someone claimed that this was wrong: about 50% of the petroleum went for fuel and about 50% for plastics. Others pointed out that not all plastics can be recycled. So I went to see what I could find easily. I found that in the European Union, about 4% of fossil fuels are used for feed stock for plastics:
87% for heating and transport
9 % chemicals and other use
4% as feedstock to make plastics

Nothing like being wrong by more than a factor of 10...
