I have noticed that "internet trolls" seem to have a lot in common with those who suffer from "borderline personality disorder":
*They quickly change their opinions about people they interact with; they believe that people they deal with are either the best, or the worst. They do not see shades of grey.
*They seek out or create environments that are hostile to them, and then make every effort to stay in a situation with a huge amount of conflict. Even when they are not wanted, they will stay someplace where they are not wanted specifically because they are not wanted.
*They will often state that their goal is to get as many people upset and many people angry at them as possible.
*They are often high-functioning and extremely manipulative. They will purposely twist statements they hear from others, or material they have read, to cast someone else in the most uncomplimentary light. They engage in vendettas that last for weeks, and months and years out of pure spite.
*Where trolls and borderlines interact with others, it is common to see a relatively peaceful group descend into infighting and recriminations and nonsense because of the manipulations of the trolls/borderlines, such as rumors they have passed around.
*Both trolls and borderlines complain bitterly about how misunderstood they are and how the entire world is against them, although most times they have created the situation themselves.
Another common trait just surfaced recently, when I observed an internet troll frantically rewriting history. This is also a very common activity of borderlines. If they are caught in a lie, they claim it did not happen, or have some sort of lame excuse, or just ignore it. They seem unable to admit that, "Yes that bad event happened and I did it, but I was upset/angry/drunk/sleep-deprived/frustrated/etc". They are never able to apologize for what they have done, let alone admit that they have done it. They are never able to admit that they should not have done it. They are never able to take constructive criticism. They try very hard to convince kpeople around them that others are deluded and misremembering things, and only they, the troll/borderline, has a firm grip on reality.
Here is a summary of a conversation I was part of with an internet troll:
*P denied that he had called the phone of an ex-boyfriend of Skypeland resident J, although he had done it in front of many witnesses, and had hurt J's feelings considerably.
*P denied that he had tried to get ahold of the bank account information of two other Skypelanders.
*P denied that he had leaked the phone number of a Skypelander, although he was the only one who had access to it.
*P denied that he had leaked the first name of another Skypelander, although several people had heard him do it.
*P denied that he had often give out his own name in Skypecasts.
*P denied that he had called J a whore, although there were several witnesses to it.
*P denied he had threatend a few other Skypelanders with lawsuits
*P denied that he had recruited and introduced the disruptive visitors H1, H2 and H3 to a given corner of Skypeland, although there were many witnesses to this.
*P denied that his puppet H1 had ever called J a slut, although it was in written records that P had access to and had posted everywhere in an attempt to cause chaos.
*P denied that he had ever threatened to crash a given website, although he had repeatedly made threats to do so that many others heard.
*P repeatedly claimed his only reason to take part in Skypeland was to get as many people as angry as possible and get as many people to hate him as he could, but then denied that he had ever said this. P did this in spite of having made this statement hundreds of times and there were dozens of witnesses to this.
There are many many other examples of this sort of denial. I noticed that the more trouble P got in, the more P stuttered and stammered. P probably should not play poker; he has quite a few "tells". P's behavior is mind boggling, and somewhat frustrating until you realize what is going on.
As I contemplate the evidence, the more clear it is that internet trolls more than likely suffer from some malady that is akin to borderline personality disorder, if not identical to borderline personality disorder. There are just too many similarities.
